Nobody ever talks about the real struggles of motherhood. We all hear about sleepless nights, the feeding struggles of a newborn, the willpower of a toddler etc. What I didn't anticipate was the post-partum anxiety I would experience. Having the realization that the entire world is so terrifying completely differently than I had ever imagined. Bath time- more like instant death if my eyes wandered to my cellphone. The baby is peacefully sleeping in their crib, you better make sure they're breathing! Is that window too close to the crib? Someone could easily break in to steal your child in the middle of the night unnoticed. Forget about leaving the house alone. I myself look like a 16 year old, I felt like a target. GUNS! A gun would be great. Not for someone like me. Guns are for people who know for certain they would be able to shoot it, and shoot quickly. I needed something that made me feel better about being alone with a child or two. Thats when I started looking into carrying pepper spray around. This tiny little can gave me such a sense of freedom. Of course, now a day I am hypersensitive to my surroundings but I feel more protected with my safety keychain. The pepper spray is only step one to this journey.
